album-of-the-week:

The artwork for Absolution was designed by the legendary Storm Thorgerson, who designed the artwork for albums such as The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway by Genesis, Houses of the Holy by Led Zeppelin, The Mollusk by Ween, and most of Pink Floyd’s albums, including Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Division Bell, and perhaps the most iconic album cover of all time, The Dark Side of the Moon.

His work on Absolution depicts a man staring up at floating bodies, but all that can be seen are their shadows on the ground. The image was co-designed by drummer Dominic Howard, who described it as “…people coming down to Earth or leaving the Earth, it’s open to interpretation.” Other images for the album was made, including images of children, a business man, and a barefoot man (this was used to promote the Absolution tour). The images were taken by photographer Robert Truman, and interestingly enough, they are raw images, completely un-photoshopped. To achieve this, Thorgerson explained “In pursuit again of the avowed philosophy of ‘doing it for real’ we made cut-out shapes from hardboard and fixed them on top of tall poles, took them to a chalkpit near London and photographed them in strong sunlight, thus to cast definite shadows. All very well you might think, except for the typical, crappy English weather, unpredictable yet grey, which meant we had to shoot this three times.”

Describing the image himself, Thorgerson stated “It is a though he is witnessing some mystical event, a visitation of strange beings, which can only be inferred by us, the viewers of the picture, because all we see is shadows, whereas the viewer of the picture see them for real, gliding serenely overhead. He is deeply moved and experiences a kind of absolution as one might in the presence of such a miraculous sight.”

“Because I understand now. You said I was going to die, but you mean this whole world is going to blink out of existence. But that’s not dying, because a better world takes its place. The Doctor’s world. And I’m still alive. That’s right, isn’t it? I don’t die. If I change things, I don’t die.”
